Quigg-

“I haven’t agreed to doing your project yet," said Carmela.

“Come on,” Quigg growled, “you know you want to. Besides, it’ll be fun to work together again.”

“It’ll be fun to do the logo and package designs,” said Carmela.

“So you’ll do it?” Quigg enthused.

“I suppose,” said Carmela, suddenly feeling mouse- trapped.

“Excellent. I’ll call the winery and tell them you’ll be there around ten tomorrow, okay?”

“Okay, sure,” said Carmela.

“And I’ll make sure you get the grand tour.”

“The fifty-cent tour will be just fine,” said Carmela. “Love to get those discounts,” chuckled Quigg.

By four forty-five, sugar skulls had been cleverly decorated and bangles adorned, and a purple twilight haze was settling over the French Quarter. This was the golden hour, the time of day Carmela liked most. A hush between the daytime hustle-bustle of tourists and the go-go nighttime when clubs and cafes pulsed with thumping music. Lights winked slowly on, lacy wrought-iron balconies and gates caught the glint from a setting sun, and you could hear the patter of secluded garden fountains behind old brick walls.

“Goodness, look at the time,” exclaimed Baby. She jumped up and began stuffing her bangles and farmers’ market goodies into her Gucci tote bag. Which set off a chain reaction among the other customers, too.

“Know what we should do?” said Gabby, carrying Car- mela’s demo skull up to the front counter.

“Hmm?” said Carmela. She was gazing out the front window at the soft glow of gaslights in the dusk.

“We should put a lighted candle inside your skull and leave it burning in the front window.”

Carmela smiled. “A sneak preview of the Day of the Dead procession.”

“Something like that,” said Gabby. “If we use a tiny vigil light, the candle should just burn out by itself in a couple of hours.”

And in a couple of hours , Carmela thought to herself, 77/ be at the Ballet Dracula.
